Marcy Downunder

This site is for my friends and family to read about my adventures downunder(not to make freaky blog friends). Shannon and I are travelling Australia and some surrounding countries this fall/winter/spring. We leave October 21st! and have no idea when we are coming back. I am not known for calling and emailing peoople, so I will try to do better with postings! Hope you all find this interesting, at least at times, and entertaining always.

Newy

We are officially living in Newcastle, NSW. We moved into a place at Bar Beach. Shannon and I are sharing a room, and a bed, in someones flat right by the beach. Its pretty funny, us all shacked up. The first night afternoon that we moved in we were really introduced to the town and our roomies. Shannon and I unpacked a little before we hit the beach. Ahhhh, the beach. We got hungry, so Steve took us over to this place called the Beaches to get a bite to eat and a beer. Steve is our really normal roomate and hes super cool. So we filled our bellies and decided that we should go to a place that has really good live music everyday of the week I think, although Sunday afternoons, or 'arvos' are a really big time to go out to pubs and have some drinks. We listened to a band for awhile there and had a couple more drinks before Paul, our wierdo of a roomate, decided that we should hit the meat raffle. Yep, the meat raffle. Apparently its a big thing out here and they were floored that we hadn't heard of them. I guess Paul supplies all the meat cause he goes to so many of these things. So Shannon and I show up to gamble our way at winning some meat. Its exactly what it sounds like. You pay either 5 or 10 dollars and if your numbers are called you get to go pick your prize, and they are huge trays of meat! Anyway, by this time we had a few more drinks into us so we just had a hoot the whole time. They even let Shannon and I go up and choose our prizes when they're numbers were called! It was hilarious. After this they took us to the balls club, or lawn bowling as you may know it. Another typical Aussie thing, and very popular activity on a summer's eve after work. We were definitely welcomed to Newcastle and shown what the town has to offer our first day here, but we had a good time too.
We started our job search on Tuesday. It went really well and I got three trials at restaurants right around the corner from our place. The first one is called Chachas and I started there today. Its a great spot and I work again this Sunday. The best part is that waitresses make a killing here, from $15-18 an hour. I have two more trials this weekend but have to chose only one to do and hope it goes well so because this job at Chachas is part-time and its only opened til 5. So I need a few more hours. A trial is kind of an interview and if you do well they will most likely hire you. Thats why it would be nice to do both this weekend, cause I would likely get a job from one. But I have to work on Sunday Chachas so have to pick a place to trial and like I said, hope all goes well. Wish me luck!
The weather here is not very nice again today. This cold front blew in yesterday so it went from 30 degrees to 18 in one afternoon. We are really hoping it gets better for the weekend...especially me cause I only work til early afternoon both days and I want to hit the beach! Steve even has a surfboard we can use so maybe I can 'catch a few waves'!
