Marcy Downunder

This site is for my friends and family to read about my adventures downunder(not to make freaky blog friends). Shannon and I are travelling Australia and some surrounding countries this fall/winter/spring. We leave October 21st! and have no idea when we are coming back. I am not known for calling and emailing peoople, so I will try to do better with postings! Hope you all find this interesting, at least at times, and entertaining always.

Here we go again...an update

Bundaberg, Queensland...our fruitpicking destination. We arrived in Bundaberg over 2 weeks ago now. I seriously didn't know what we were getting ourselves into when we got here, but thank goodness things have turned out much better than anticipated. We got in at about 7am to the only hostel that had any vacancy. We planned on staying for 2-3 weeks for a little hiatus, to save from spending money, as opposed to really making any and saving lots. The hostel was alright...but the room was rank. It was only the fridge, which got cleaned pronto, but it wasn't the warmest welcome knowing that it wasn't just a one night stop. I wasn' t exactly in the best of spirits to be in Bundaberg for one. Its not a backpackers town with nice beaches or lots to do, which is what we got used while travelling New Zealand and the east coast(its so dead here), and fruitpicking wasn't one my top list of priorities while in Australia. Anyway...the hostel guys got us a job for the next day, which went alright. It was sorting peppers...nothing to serious and we got to meet some people we would be living with. The next day we found ourselves on the citrus farm roster and thats where we have been ever since, over 2 weeks now! Its not the worst work, but Shan and I work like turtles so we don't actually make much money. Up until today we picked Christmas oranges(and ate a lot of them of course) but we found out that we had to pick lemons today. Those damn trees have the biggest, sharpest spikes ALLLL through them so you can't even pick without getting scratched and poked to shit. It SUCKS! Anyway, I think our supervisor felt a little bad for us girls(Shan, Liisa, Charlotte and I who always pick together and live together) so tomorrow we don't have to do it! So very happy.
Other Bundaberg excitement includes going to the pub and hanging around the hostel. Its really nice with a big open yard with a pool, and everyone's rooms open onto this courtyard so its really social and pretty fun. Apparently its the best hostel here and we just got in by fluke. Its got the internet which is why I have finally started updating this and emailing people more often. We've met great people, as alway, and although it wont be hard to leave the fruitpicking on Sunday, its always tough to say goodbye. We had a couple Japanese guys in our room and they were such awesome roomates. They were always happy, a lot of fun and we were sad to see them go last weekend.
We will work til Friday, go out on the big city for the weekend then its Hervey Bay on Sunday. We are going to Fraser Island from there, which is a 124km sand dune island for 4-wheel driving(a 2 night trip). Its supposed to be one of the most amazing parts of the east coast, with rainforests, turquoise lakes and unique wildlife. Although some of this unique wildlife includes "man-eating" bull sharks off the island, which is why you can only swim in the lakes and not the ocean. Hopefully once we get to Rainbow Beach(our stop after Fraser) we will finally finally be able to swim off Australia's gorgeous beaches again.
